Pictures of Holbrook, Arizona. ~ 2 comments.

You may have noticed that I didn't post to my blog yesterday, and it's not because I didn't write it; it was because I was at a truck stop that didn't have any Internet that worked for me. Just so you won't be confused, what you're about to read is what I wrote yesterday, so pretend yesterday is today, but tomorrow will actually be what I write today. And since tomorrow never comes, today probably doesn't actually exist either....

I've changed my mind. I was going to leave yesterday, since my three days of free boondocking are over, but I decided to stay for one more night and then go to Holbrook, Arizona, today, which is Sunday. I figure that getting to Holbrook on a Sunday morning would mean far less traffic, and parking wherever I wanted to stop and take a picture of the Route 66 buildings would be a lot easier. And it's supposed to be cloudy all day today, which I prefer for pictures. So I took pictures of downtown Holbrook for most of the morning, and now I’ll stay overnight at one of the local truck stops.

Since it's May now, I guess I'm officially on my way back to Colorado, where I will probably arrive sometime about the middle of this month, bringing my winter travels to an end. I don't want to arrive too early because it still snows in May, but Colorado has had so little snow this winter that May might not be a problem.

It will be good to see my family again. I miss them a lot while I'm away. On the other hand, Summer is when I have to take care of business and deal with appointments and everything else that I put off until I get back to Denver. I'll have doctor's appointments with the VA. I'll have to renew my driver's license in September; that oughta be fun. It's my personal opinion that every minute spent at the DMV is a waste of my precious life. And speaking of precious life, in September, I will celebrate my 80th birthday, and I've always believed that 80 is officially old, very old.... There's no calling it late middle-aged anymore; it's just old.

Dad is tired of driving the family Truckster down Route 66 for their annual vacation. His wife is complaining about the heat, and four elementary school-age kids are screaming, crying, and wrestling in the back of the Truckster unencumbered by seat belts, which hadn’t been invented yet.

And what Dad really needs is a break from driving, a break from the kids, and something to eat… and like an oasis in the desert, Holbrook, Arizona, appears out of nowhere, and Dad says, " Hey, kids, do you want to pet a dinosaur?’’

After everyone finishes a taco or two at Joe & Aggies, Dad's ready to hit the dusty trail again in search of ….. The Family Vacation.

By the looks of things, Stan must have very few customers.

The Holbrook Police Department. You can’t read it in this picture, but the blue pickup truck is a cop car, and on the door it says ‘‘this vehicle was confiscated in a drug bust’’

Downtown Holbrook.

The new interstate bypassed Holbrook. And a thriving tourist town lost most of its visitors. Some places hang on. But most have seen better days.

But a few tourist attractions hung on by their toenails, trying to do anything to keep from going under.

Is it better to sleep in a gen-u - wine teepee than a Motel 6? Ask the kids on vacation and see what they say.
