August.

Well, here it is, almost August, which is well known for several things, such as being the hottest month of the year around here, the month when all of the tourists go back home, and only a month away from September, which is Fall and the best weather of the year in Colorado.

August is also known as a good time to head up into the mountains. Most tourists will leave by early August to get the kids back in school in Texas and Kansas, making it much easier to find camping and boondocking spots in the high country. And because of the aforementioned heat, there's no better time to be in the mountains where the daytime temperatures are perfect, and a fleece jacket feels really good by late afternoon.

August also marks the approximate halfway point of my summertime stay in Colorado. Of course, that's somewhat variable, depending on the weather and when I feel like heading south. So all in all, August should be a pretty good month except for the heat, but that heat encourages me to head for God's Country, where the Summer weather is perfect.
