A sad tale.~ 4 comments.
Well, my 80th-year celebration has come and gone, and I don't feel much different than I did before, so I guess that's a good sign.
One big difference is that I couldn't get a DMV appointment to renew my driver's license until September 25th, so I can't legally drive until then. This is the first time I haven't had a driver's license since I was 13 years old, and it feels weird to me.
This whole driver's license problem started over a year ago. I realized my driver's license was going to expire in 2026, and I wouldn't be able to pass the vision test at the DMV with cataracts. That created a long list of complicated things I had to do, mostly things I had no control over, before I could renew my driver's license,
1....Starting with getting appointments with the VA to have my cataracts removed, and that alone took quite a while. And of course. The two cataract operations dragged on for months with eye tests, examinations, operations, not to mention all the eye drops and healing that went on seemingly forever.
2....Then I had to make an appointment to get new glasses since my vision still wasn't perfect, and that took a lot more time than it used to before Obamacare came along.
3....Then they had to make the new glasses, and that took a while.
4....Things then slowed to a crawl when I had to get involved with the DMV, a perfect example of an agency run from top to bottom by a government that couldn't care less about the customers who, by law, are forced to deal with them.
So here I sit, Someone who's had a driver's license for 67 years and has not only driven cars, motorcycles, trucks, and boats in half a dozen foreign countries, but also every kind of military vehicle that can be loaded onto an Air Force cargo plane, has been deemed illegal to drive anything but a bicycle for a couple of weeks.

Every once in a while, when I'm in Tucson, I like to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum and see the different kinds of airplanes on display. To me, most airplanes are beautiful, but there are some that qualify as truly ugly. Here are pictures I took of four planes I believe are truly ugly, starting with this one. The museum is rebuilding it to restore it to how it used to be, but no matter how it looked before, it's still going to look ugly.
his poor plane obviously tried to commit suicide by swallowing an entire bottle of ugly pills, but it lived on. NASA used this plane to move rocket parts around, which explains its bloated size. Every time I see it, I can't help but wonder: how in the world did they find a pilot who would admit to flying this thing?
With two counter-rotating props and a body that looks like it's laying a giant egg, it's a wonder the engineers who designed this thing ever stopped laughing.
I didn't see any signs with information about this plane, so your guess is as good as mine.
Since your eyes are probably still burning from looking at those airplanes, I thought I would throw in this picture of a sunrise on Vulture Peak near Wickenburg, Arizona, which used to be one of my favorite places to boondock.
