The last time?
I spent the day today puttering around in the camper and mostly relaxing. September is almost here, and to me, September means Fall is starting to get its foot in the door. The daytime temperatures are now mostly in the high 80s, and nights are starting to cool off to the 60s. All of which sounds good to me because, as you know, Fall is my favorite time of the year.
I keep seeing more and more online stories about Elephant Butte State Park in New Mexico and how water levels have fallen to some of the lowest levels ever seen. They show pictures and videos of the lake, but it's hard for me to relate to because the water is so far away from places I normally boondock that there is nothing recognizable for me to see. But since I've spent so much time at Elephant Butte and enjoyed my stays there, I think I would like to visit again just to see what it really looks like. And since they're saying that the water levels are going down even farther over the winter, it makes me even more anxious to get a look at what's actually going on.
The Wal-Mart in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, allows overnight stays, so I could boondock there and visit Elephant Butte in the daytime. Also, there is a small park next to the Rio Grande where I've boondocked for $10 a night. So I could spend a few nights there and see what's going on at Elephant Butte Lake, so I guess it would come down to other places I could stay on the cheap in New Mexico, And that would also give me a chance to check out the Bosque del Apache again and see if the Sand Hill Cranes have returned, since it was such a huge disappointment last winter. And there is a small park in the tiny town before you get to the Bosque where you can boondock for free, so maybe I can visit New Mexico... Who knows, it might be the last time.
