Painters’ poles and high-tech gadgets
Not much going on today, partly cloudy mid-70s, just a nice laid-back kind of Sunday. However, I did manage to accomplish something on the Arctic Fox yesterday. Over the years, I had purchased some gadgets with antennas that provided better cell phone reception at greater distances. And another electronic device, which also had an antenna, allowed me to pick up a stronger Internet signal in marginal areas.
I bought these high-tech gadgets probably eight or ten years ago and used adjustable painters' poles, which were attached to the camper’s ladder on the back of the Arctic Fox, to mount the antennas. This allowed me to adjust the antennas up or down, depending on whether or not I was towing.
These gadgets worked somewhat, but not enough to justify the hundreds of dollars they cost. I recall that I spent more time tinkering with them than using them, because the benefits they offered were not particularly significant, and I was always having to make adjustments.
What used to be high-tech had run its course and was no longer needed, as I had replaced both of them with a Verizon MiFi gadget that provided all the Wi-Fi I needed. And the ever-increasing cell phone reception from Verizon kept my phone working almost everywhere I stayed.
But long after the fancy electronics had served their purpose, I still had those antennas, the painters’ poles they were mounted to, and a spaghetti bowl of wiring hanging on the back of the Arctic Fox. So yesterday I decided to do something about it and after a brief time standing on a ladder with a wrench in my hand, and wire cutters to corral the blossoming wires necessary to power the antennas, I had everything under control with most things ending up in the trash, and a couple of extending painters poles in my family's garage waiting for the dreaded day when some unfortunate family member might be coerced into painting something.
