I CAN'T HEAR YOU

Cloudy with a little rain today, but it wasn't too bad since it reached the low 70s for a high. Nighttime temperatures are still in the 50s and will continue to be in the 50s, which is a great sleeping temperature, as far as I'm concerned.

I think I've discussed this before, but since my doctor, whom I will see on June 17, is making an appointment for me to see an audiologist to get a hearing aid, the subject is fresh in my mind and may need to be reviewed again.

I feel that being hard of hearing, "IN SOME WAYS," is one of the worst handicaps a person can have. Being blind or confined to a wheelchair is worse in all ways, but at least you get a little sympathy from the world, and you don’t make people angry because you can’t see. However, when you have trouble understanding what people are saying because you can’t hear, there is precious little sympathy, but often a little anger. And the only understanding will come from people who suffer from the same handicap.

Loss of hearing is not just confined to old geezers, even though old folks are often hard of hearing. My loss of hearing occurred while I was in the Air Force, working on the flightline, where I was subjected to running Jet engines on C-141s and turboprop engines on C-130s. My separation physical showed significant hearing loss in the frequency range of those aircraft engines, but I could still hear people talking fairly well, so it had very little effect on me.

But now that I'm older and hearing people talk has become a real problem, it's obvious to everyone around me that I need hearing aids. I hope that hearing aids will solve the problem because when you have trouble hearing people talk, you may only understand a few words in the sentence they've just said. And you try to guess what they were talking about by the four or five words that you actually understood, but that seldom works, so you're constantly asking people to repeat themselves, which makes them angry at you for not being able to hear. So, eventually, you avoid going to places where you can’t hear what people are saying to you, like crowded restaurants, and sooner or later, you avoid having conversations with anyone, or they avoid having conversations with you, and your world becomes smaller and smaller until you're the only one in it.

It begins looking somewhat like a watermelon.

But in a few days, it turns into a beautiful flower…..Although I would much prefer a watermelon.
