The winter may be cold, but I'll be warm.

So, what did I get to help protect me from the cold this coming winter? And why do I need protection from the cold in Arizona and New Mexico?

The why is pretty simple: as I get older, the cold affects me more than it did when I was young. And it's not just me. A lot of folks feel that way, as shown by all the older folks retiring and heading for warmer places like Florida and Arizona. And a little more personal: I frequently notice that when I'm walking into Walmart on a chilly morning, Young folks are still wearing shorts, while me and most folks my age are wearing coats. The blood thinner I'm taking can also cause some people, under certain conditions, to feel cold, but since my blood tests are all coming back normal, I think it's mostly my age causing me to seek out warm places to spend the winter.

Every weather forecast I've seen starting several months ago agrees that it's going to be colder and wetter in the places I spend the winter, which are New Mexico and Arizona, and all agree that this record El Niño is the cause. Now, I'm not very worried about the temperatures of Arizona and New Mexico. Although I am taking that into consideration, my biggest worry is....Cloudy weather and keeping my batteries charged while boondocking. Being a little too cold is annoying, but day after day of cloudy weather is a disaster.

So what is this thing I've bought to keep me warm on these cold mornings before the sun comes up, when I'm trying to take a picture of a bird or a sunrise? I considered it in the past, but something always prevented it from working well in my situation. But now most of those problems are solved, so I bought a Battery-powered electric vest, which I will talk about in tomorrow's blog post.

Since my granddaughter is dressed up as a “cute vampire,” she has a vampire bite on her neck.
