Giving it some thought.

With the grandkids back in school, it's been very quiet around here. Those who are working are gone all day, which leaves me peacefully living in the driveway with nothing much to do except things I should be doing, which I typically put off until they no longer have any importance to me.

The weather has settled down into the late summer doldrums, which usually means it's in the 80s or 90s during the daytime, with a chance of thunderstorms on most afternoons, and lows in the 60s, which is not chilly enough to be my favorite sleeping weather, but it's getting there.

I generally don't give much thought to my winter travels this time of year, usually saving those thoughts until September and the first signs of Fall. I've been watching some information about the Elephant Butte reservoir in New Mexico on the Internet, and how the water levels are getting so low it's difficult to put a boat in the water; tourists have largely stopped coming there, and the nearby town of Truth or Consequences is suffering from the lack of business.

Elephant Butte was always one of my favorite places to go and spend time until the New Mexico Park Service raised all the camping fees to outrageous levels, so I've largely written it off despite its almost endless boondocking sites, Walmart only three or four miles away, and all the friendly folks I've met there. But what I'm seeing on the Internet looks interesting, given the record-low water.

But I can't just show up there; I would have to find free or cheap places to boondock in New Mexico, which means I would have to avoid all the State Parks where I used to stay. But it might be possible, so I'll give it some thought.
