Cripple Creek fireworks

I moseyed downtown about dark to watch the fireworks, not knowing what time they’re going to start shooting things off... Turns out it was about 10 o'clock, which happens to coincide with my bedtime. There's no particular part of town you're supposed to be in to watch the fireworks since they’re visible from just about anywhere. Thirty minutes later, I ambled back home and was very thankful that I had remembered to bring a flashlight to find my way back, since my night vision is terrible.

Other than that it was more walking up and down the hills of Cripple Creek seeing what I recognized and what had changed beyond recognition. There were a few things that I recognized, and a lot that had changed.

One of the things we Cripple Creek businessmen complained about back in my day was the lack of hotel and motel rooms in Cripple Creek, so that visitors could spend the night. If they spent the night, this meant we businessmen would have some customers in the morning, as the tourists would have more places to stay overnight. But with a fairly small amount of rooms available most tourist stayed in Colorado Springs and spent a few hours visiting Cripple Creek in the daytime then going back to their motels in the Springs before dinner..... Very few tourists were brave enough to face the twisty roads, the exciting guardrail free drop-offs, and the single lane tunnel getting in and out of Cripple Creek when it got dark.

The casino owners knew that was a problem, but they had the money —and more importantly —the power to fix it. The dangerous single lane railroad tunnel was bypassed, guardrails were installed on the more interesting parts of the highway, and almost any casino now has more rooms to stay in than the entire town of Cripple Creek had 30 years ago. The new casino across the road from me has about 300 rooms available, and I doubt if the whole city of Cripple Creek had 50 rooms back in my day.

But that's life; if you live long enough, you will probably see serious problems that have been fixed, as well as completely different problems that need to be addressed. That's the way life is, and why it's so important to find happiness no matter what's going on around you.

Downtown Cripple Creek on the Fourth of July, standing on the sidewalk waiting for the fireworks to start.

I just noticed, if you look at the streetlights on the left side of the picture they will give you an idea of how hilly Cripple Creek Is.

Finally !!!

I enjoyed watching the fireworks show, but I’ve never been able to get a decent picture of fireworks, and I believe this is the reason…….

I understand that to get interesting pictures of fireworks, your camera absolutely has to be on a tripod, but I can’t stand to carry a tripod around, especially in the dark, up and down the hills of Cripple Creek.

Taking pictures of fireworks is challenging at best because you're dealing with something extremely bright, and in the same image, everything else is extremely dark. Now I know how to fix that problem, but it requires a tripod, and we all know how much I dislike carrying one around. I have to use a tripod for the Milky Way pictures I take, but that's the only way I can get any photos, so I'm willing to do it. but with fireworks pictures, I take a bunch of them and hope three or four of them turn out okay.
