So what kind of bird am I talking about? ~ 2 comments

If you've been wondering since yesterday what the name of this horrendous bird I was talking about is, I won't keep you waiting any longer, its name is "Woody Woodpecker". And I'm not talking about the cute kids' cartoon Woody Woodpecker, I'm talking about the horrendous real woodpeckers that haunt the trees and make homeowners consider selling their house at a loss just to get shed of that dang bird.

I think the worst experience I've had with woodpeckers is when I lived in Woodland Park, which, needless to say, had plenty of trees for woodpeckers to live in and make all the noise they want. But with all those millions of trees that surrounded my property, the woodpeckers in my area every spring, in an effort to call on their mate as loudly as possible, chose not a tree somewhere in the vast forest, but my two metal chimneys coming from my two woodstoves that provided backup heat in the winter.

If you think a woodpecker pecking on a tree is loud and annoying, which it is, you should hear one of these expert peckers pecking on a metal chimney..... It will wake the dead or make it wish you were dead.

And they don't start their chimney pecking while you're having breakfast, oh no, they start their pecking slightly before the sun comes up, giving them an entire day of relentless pecking.

The folks we bought the house from told me they bought a .410 shotgun for the sole purpose of eradicating every woodpecker in the state of Colorado, if possible. I didn't pay much attention to that suggestion at the time, but before my first spring was over, I was on the verge of using one of the many shotguns I already owned.

But because of my love for animals, some more so than others, I kept a handful of rocks lying on the deck to chuck in the general direction of the woodpeckers on the chimney, which was only a temporary solution to the racket. Thankfully, in the Colorado mountains, the Spring mating season only lasts about 10 days, so as miserable as a woodpecker can make your life, at least it doesn't last very long.
