Still here. ~ 2 comments

I'm still hanging around Whitewater Draw. I know I've overstayed my three-day maximum allowance, but there are only 4 of us boondocking here, which is less than half the number it takes to fill up the boondocking area, and the campground wasn't even full during the weekend. And since one of the guys has been boondocking since before I got here. I feel it's not the end of the world if I overstay for a few days.

Yes, I understand that rules are rules, but when it comes to camping on public land, there are usually only two reasons why those rules are enforced. One is by limiting the amount of time you can stay on public land. It gives others a chance to be there if it gets crowded. However, as most of us know, the main reason is that they don't want people LIVING on public land, which can happen if you don't limit the length of stays in one way or another.

Now I know I have no desire to live somewhere; in fact, I very seldom even stay for the two weeks that I'm allowed. Being able to move on and live in different places for short periods of time is what I'm all about. So the authorities have no concern about me moving into some place and staying there forever.

One of the ways you can tell if the authorities care if you're staying someplace for too long is if they have a way of determining when you arrived at your boondocking spot. Like at a state park, where you sign in when you get there. After all, how do they know if you've stayed too long if they don't know when you got there? So, if you don't see a way of letting the authorities know when. you’ve got someplace, which obviously means they don't really care how long you've been there. As long as you don't make it your home. At least that's what I have found to be the case in my interactions with local cops and rangers.

And like a park ranger once told me, "If you stay someplace too long, all they're going to do is tell you to move on. Anything else requires paperwork, and nobody wants that."
