What does it feel like? ~ 8 comments.

So what does it feel like to be 80 years old ?.... I don't know because I'm not quite there yet, but I'm close enough to have a pretty good idea of what turning 80 will be like. First of all, nothing will be different about that date, except that it's a milestone. My feelings will be about the same as they have been for the last four or five years, which means, for me, it's just a slow, steady decline mentally and physically, which, of course, has been happening all along but has been the most noticeable in the last few years.

The good news is I recognize these new limitations and, instead of trying to prove I'm not geezerly by doing stupid things like climbing up ladders, I tend to stay on the ground as much as possible, unless I've got a hole in my roof that I can look up and see the sky through.

I don't remember a lot of the things I should be remembering nowadays, but since I'm very hard of hearing, I can't really tell whether I forgot something or didn't hear it when somebody said it. Either way, old age gets the blame, but I personally blame my hearing since I'm hesitant to blame what little is left of my mind.

So all in all, I don't think I'll be sitting in a wheelchair drooling into my bowl of Jell-O the day after my 80th birthday because I've got a very special purpose in this life that I need to accomplish, so I have to remain mentally and physically functional until that most important mission has been completed....Now, if I could just remember what the heck it was !!!
