One less thing between me and leaving.
Having learned everything I needed to know about a Zoom call from the VA IT guy, now all I have to do is stumble through my doctor's Zoom call on the 5th at 12:30, which leaves me plenty of time to drive to the Bass Pro shop parking lot in Colorado Springs and officially kick off my winter road trip.
My first day or two on the road is always the toughest because I miss my family so much. But that's just part of the life you get when you're a traveling man. I always wonder if my dad felt that way when he was on flying status in the Air Force.....He would come home from work, grab his packed B4 bag from the closet, put his Air Force-issue .38 Special in its shoulder holster, and say goodbye to the family. He would contact us as soon as he could, which might be in a few days or a few months. We never knew, and neither did he.
Our first clue would be a few days later, in the paper or on television. There would be a news story about a Hotspot somewhere in the world, war in the Congo, or the French having problems in Indochina- that's what Vietnam was called in those days- and we figured that's where he was, flying around in the Air Force's biggest plane, a C-124, him and his crew, who we all knew because they were just like family.... that's the life he chose: the life of a traveling man.
