A tiny twinge of ambition.
A tiny twinge of ambition sparked in my mind this morning, and I spent some time gathering the tools I needed to change my truck's fuel filter. I didn't have enough ambition to actually do any work, but gathering the tools made the project seem easier and less daunting, just by breaking the whole project into several small, seemingly simple parts. I've used this method often for things I don't particularly want to do but can't rationalize putting off because they're so important, like changing the fuel filter on a diesel truck.
Splitting a job into smaller pieces is especially useful for someone like me, who uses any excuse not to do something that needs doing, and here are some reasons why.
Number one.... I need a kick in the pants to start doing just about anything that requires effort on my part, and breaking a job down into pieces makes the whole job sound like a lot less work
Number two..… Breaking a job into pieces lets me stop guilt-free at any point and take a break, and that break may last a day or more.
Number three.… When I lose interest and stop working on a job, I can still congratulate myself on getting something done, even if that something is minuscule
Number four.… By taking lots of breaks between different parts of the job, I can easily stretch an hour-long job into days of looking busy, and looking "busy" is a surefire way to keep others from finding things for you to do.
