Completely and utterly useless.
Well, here we are, involved in another war. Seems like every time I turn around, we're fighting with somebody. But you know now that I can't be drafted, I don't mind wars as much as I used to.
Back when I was living in Miami and had just graduated from high school, the Vietnam War was going on hot and heavy, and I realized there was a draft going on, but I figured they wouldn't want me, since I had no skills other than cleaning stables in a barn full of horses, and the military no longer had barns full of horses like they used to during the Civil War, so I figured I was relatively safe.
Knowing this I spent a lot of my time tooling around Miami on my 1965 BSA 650 Lightning Rocket, looking at the girls on the beach, listening to the Beatles, and didn't have a care in the world as long as the Army didn't bring back horse-drawn artillery. But then I got that dreaded letter from the government congratulating me on being drafted, and I believe it gave me 30 days to report.....
Being an Air Force Brat, I knew enough about the military to know that I didn't want to go into the Army, but my draft notice said I was going into the Army, and the government seemed pretty sure that was going to happen or else. So I turned to my recently retired from the Air Force dad, and he talked to some people, and before I could buy a bus ticket to Canada, I found myself enlisted in the Air Force.
Looking back on it, things worked out okay. I didn't think I had a great time during the four years I was in the Air Force, but the more I look back on it, the more good things I can see, and overall, I believe it was good for me.
I remember when I was in the service, we would complain and moan about everything, especially things like how the $1.65 an hour that I was being paid cleaning stables made me downright wealthy compared to what the Air Force was paying me, and talk about things like how old people should be drafted into the military, instead of us young kids. And if old people had to fight wars, there would be a lot fewer wars. But now that I'm old, I can see why they don't do that..... I was never a ball of fire in the Air Force, but I would be utterly useless in my current state.
Theboondork
A few days ago, I was boondocked with those RVs in the background. It's okay, but it wasn't a very nice area. Fortunately, no matter what area I'm in, that huge antenna on top of the little hill gives me full bars of cell service all the time.
Look at this perfect little boondocking spot. To a boondocker like me, this spot just screams "pullover and stay awhile". It's got privacy, and yet there are some neighbors in the background. Normally, there's only one RV parked there, but there's plenty of room if you have two or three friends' RVs coming with you. It's level, even though this is a hilly area. And it's even got a walking trail meandering up the hill in the background.... As I said, it's perfect.
Of course, my boondocking spot is not exactly embarrassing either. It's level, it's private, there's plenty of room to spread out. And I've got a great view of Vulture Peak in the background.
