It really bugs me whenever I see public land being made difficult or impossible for the public to use. Whether it's completely removed from use by the public, limited to the point where few people can use it, or costs so much that only the financially fortunate among us can use it, it bothers me when our land is kept away from its rightful owners..... And that would be us.
Do there need to be rules for public land use? Of course, but the rules need to be simple: you can't destroy the land, you can't live on the land permanently, you can't keep others from using the public land, and the public should not have to pay to use the land that they own.
Will it cost something to take care of the public land? Of course, it will, and with all the tax money this country wastes, the government could certainly find a few bucks to take care of the public's land without charging the taxpayers who have already paid for it.
WARNING
old geezer rant ahead.
This might be a good time to switch to
YouTube and watch some cat videos.
But everything seems to get more expensive, especially when you get old, and can still remember when a gallon of gasoline was 25 cents, which is one of the reasons I don't much care about going back to Simpsonville, South Carolina, or Malden, South Carolina, or even Miami, Florida, all places where I grew up, mostly because I wouldn't recognize anything, and all I could do would be to stand on a corner and talk about how everything has changed, and what used to be over there that isn't anymore, and what would be the point of that?
It's really true when they say, “You can’t go home.” And I will add, you probably shouldn't, because home is a lonely place. You can go to the spot that used to be home, but it's no longer home, and you have to face the fact that you're just a stranger, in a strange place, with memories of the way things used to be that matter only to you and no one else.
So live in the present, enjoy the things you can still touch. Home is fleeting and disappears the minute you walk out the door; it's the present and the future that matter, and it's possibly the only thing any of us still have a little bit of control over.

An overview of what this county boondocking area looks like.
These Dodge Ram camper vans are very popular, and I see them all the time. I think some of their popularity is due to the fact that they cost almost half as much as a Mercedes van.
Another part of the county boondocking area. It's a nice place, the $ 10-a-night fee is reasonable, and there are lots of hiking trails in the area.
Looks like I'm not the only one to use rocks to hold down my solar panels. This is one of my neighbors, and he also left his panels out all night. I take mine in since I still worry about someone stealing them…. Although in my eleven years of full-time camping and boondocking, I have never had anything stolen.
