A trip to where my southern roots run deep?

As I mentioned in my blog before, I'm now putting only about 5,000 miles a year on my truck, and roughly half of that is just traveling to southern Arizona in the winter and back to the Denver area in the Spring. Driving those few miles every year saves me a significant amount of money, not only on diesel fuel but also on oil changes and fuel filter replacements.

The oil change light on my dashboard doesn't come on until I'm around 15,000 miles, and my fuel filter light stays off until about 10,000 miles. I had to stop changing my own oil when I became a full-timer because I no longer had some of the things I needed to change my oil, such as a container to catch the old oil and a place to dispose of it. I still change my own fuel filter, as it's fairly easy to do and doesn't require any special equipment. And since I don't drive very far anymore, such as an occasional trip to Texas, it doesn't cost me as much in diesel fuel as it used to, since I’m just running around Arizona.

I gave up on the idea of making a trip back to the places where I grew up a long time ago. These include Mobile, Alabama; the Greenville area in South Carolina; southern Georgia; and the last place I lived before moving to Colorado, Miami, Florida. I feel that trip would be very expensive, not only because of the diesel fuel required, but also because finding places to boondock is far more difficult in the crowded South. In Florida, I'm not even sure if it would be possible. So, I would have to pay outrageous amounts of money to stay at RV parks, and probably have to make plans and reservations everywhere I went.

That doesn't sound like any fun to me, even if I wanted to spend large amounts of money. So it looks like me ever showing up in the Southeast again is remote.
