A word to the wise
For full-timers, especially boondocking full-timers, this is what surviving many holidays has taught me.
.My experience when trying to find a boondocking spot near most any holiday is that Friday afternoon is way too late to be looking for a boondocking spot And this is because a lot of folks leave work early on Friday, pull the kids out of school, and beat feet for the Lake, the beach, or the mountains.
So yes, Friday afternoon is usually way too late to find any decent boondocking spots for the approaching holiday, but how about Thursday? Thursday morning is when the retired RVers head for their favorite spots to be during the holidays, so they get a lot of the good spots. There will still be plenty of camping spots left, but the Primo spots will probably be gone.
So, when do you find the best spots to camp before a holiday? Camping spots such as right next to the best fishing hole at the Lake, boondocking with the best view in the whole area, a spot where nature makes it impossible for anyone to camp right next to you, and a camping spot where everyone who drives by you thinks to themselves, "That's where I want to camp next year." There are places like that, but how do you get them?
The best way to get spots like that, besides unimaginable good luck, is to have the freedom to go camping whenever you want to. And near a holiday weekend, I would say Tuesday or Wednesday is when you should go to a boondocking area, which is before most folks are able to get there.
The same applies to leaving after the holiday is over. When everyone else is packing up to leave, let them leave, and then you can leave the next day, avoiding all the traffic heading for town where folks live.

Nice fishing boat on Chatfield reservoir.
This boat is big enough for all of his fishing buddies.
And then there’s this… I don’t mind fishing in a small boat, but I hesitate to get in a boat that an alligator can crawl in faster than I can get out.
